How to repair moldings on ceilings:
The moldings of a room, all those protruding parts that serve to adorn between the walls and the ceilings of the rooms of a house, can be damaged over the years by the settlement of the building itself. This type of damage or cracks in the moldings can be easily repaired with filler material, while the missing parts of molding in a room have to be completely rebuilt. Below we detail the easiest way to do it step by step.
6 easy steps to repair moldings on ceilings:
The short sections of moldings can be arranged in the same room, however, longer pieces should be made on a workbench and then they have to be attached to the wall with a bit of plaster on the continuation of the existing molding. In any case, whether the repair of a small molding or a long piece of it, the removal of existing paint is required before beginning any repair work.
Steps to follow for the repair in the same place:
Provisionally nail a guide on the wall, just at the bottom edge of the molding and along the wall you want to repair.
Make a profile template, including the guide. The way to proceed in these cases is with a sheet of aluminum or plastic and obtaining the desired shape of the molding. To make sure that the built model is the ideal one, bring the template closer to the other sectors of the molding, so check if it is okay.
Glue and screw the profile to a support board and cut the board according to the shape of the molding, but with the edge of the beveled contour at approximately 45 °.
Screw the ruler to the profile, so that it barely touches the wall when supporting it, and make sure that the pattern and the base form a 90º angle. Later, screw a rectangular piece to the back of the profile and to the base to offer firmness to the set.
Add a lath to the base, on both sides of the profile and at the edge’s level. Next, remove the loose material and moisten the area that is to be restored from the molding.
Mix the Paris plaster until a creamy consistency is reached and spread over the affected area. By means of successive layers of plaster, increase the thickness of the molding and move the pattern horizontally until the desired shape is obtained, while the plaster hardens.
